FTP Exposure

The use of FTP exposes companies to inadvertent disclosure of both logon information and other sensitive data. Secured connections are rarely used with FTP servers, resulting in all data transmission between the FTP client and the FTP server to be in clear text (including the logon information).

In addition, FTP makes it easy to transmit data from one location to another. Read-level access to data and an Internet connection is all that is needed for someone to send corporate data virtually anywhere in the world. FTP is typically not compliant with today’s regulations.

Managing FTP Usage

FTP is integral to the business processes of today’s large companies. In our work, it’s not uncommon to see tens to hundreds of thousands of FTP transactions daily across an enterprises FTP servers. Monitoring and managing this volume of activity is such a large task that it is often just ignored.
